Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is conducted in a one-to-one format, where the therapist and client collaborate to achieve treatment goals in a supportive and confidential environment. First, you and your therapist will meet to complete a comprehensive assessment of your concerns and goals. Following this, your therapist will then provide you with an individually tailored treatment plan to best meet your needs. Individual sessions are usually attended on a weekly or fortnightly basis, typically for 50 to 60 minutes in duration. Most people require at least 10 to 12 sessions of CBT to make significant change, so commitment to therapy is important.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is conducted in a small group format of approximately 6-8, with a therapist present to guide the group through the treatment program. Research has demonstrated that group-based CBT can be an effective alternative to individual treatment for young people with anxiety and OCD. Participants can benefit from the chance to learn from one another, and to support their peers to be brave. Group therapy tends to be structured and takes place weekly for approximately 8 to 10 weeks.

Intensive Treatment

While standard therapy sessions are typically up to one hour in duration, research has shown that more intensive, longer sessions can be equally effective in treating anxiety disorders and OCD. This can be an appealing option for families who might have to travel to access treatment. CAO psychologists can provide two- to three-hour intensive CBT sessions to help clients face their fears in a gradual but concentrated way.

Your therapist can advise you whether this would be an appropriate treatment option for you or your family.

Home Visits

Since OCD and anxiety disorders often impact the family and home environment, it is beneficial if your therapist visits you at home to enhance treatment outcomes.

This can be arranged individually with your therapist after your initial assessment.

Telehealth

Treatment can be conveniently delivered via video conference or telephone. This option is especially useful for clients who are unable to access specialist treatment locally.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) therapy can be used to enhance exposure therapy for anxiety, fears and phobias. VR is particularly useful when the feared stimulus is difficult to access (e.g., flying phobia, height phobia, needle phobia). VR involves the use of a headset that produces a fully immersive 3D environment that transports people to their feared situation to create new learning. Your therapist can assist you to incorporate VR into your exposure therapy.
